Cricket Results – 2nd Faculty Medics vs LF1 MedSoc Preview

2nd Faculty Medics vs LF1 MedSoc Preview

Well they do not come bigger than this and i’m not talking about the India Pakistan World Cup 2011 semi final next Wednesday. This is the one on the cusps of every lip in both faculties, the inaugural interfaculty match. Rhys’ men line up against Dev’s giants, and aside from all the internal politics and banter, the game is shaping up to fulfil the expected hype.

LF1 MedSoc

Led by inspirational skipper, Rhys Osbourne, they are hard drilled unit, full of the vibrance and the combative spirit of youth, and the edgy nous of older stalwarts.

Unfortunately, they finished 5th in the Players league of the CMKS indoor tournament, which means that they will be playing exclusively for pride.

Current form: WWWLL

Player Profiles

Rhys O

Arguably, LF1 MedSoc’s best player, very technically gifted, with a huge array of shots in his armoury. As captain, has very astute field placings.

Opening bat    (RHB)

Off spinner      (OB)

Strengths         Good temperament

Weakness        Has injured his shoulder, so won’t be playing

If he were an ice cream flavour:         Vanilla-  Reliable, never can go wrong

Hassan Bhojani

Unorthodox player, has been known to throw games for personal benefit. Bowling action has been referred to the ICC for dubious nature.

Opening bat (RHB)

Off spinner (OB)

Strengths                                             Slogging

Nighat

Weakness                                            Cannot call loud enough when running between wickets

If he were an ice cream flavour:         Pistachio- green says it all

Hasan Abu Baker

Steady stalwart, has seen it all. No situation can phase him.

Middle order (RHB)

Seamer (MF)

Strengths         Height

Shacheesh Sinha

Vice captain of the squad. Capable of making tough decisions in a heart- beat. Good batsmen and zippy bowler

Middle order (RHB)

Seamer (FM)

Strengths         Roti making

Weakness        Too much attention to fine detail

If he were an ice cream flavour:         Screwball

Govind Sharma

Punjabi by name; Punjabi by nature; British by paper, but this Sher thinks he’s Hard Kaur. Useful player, more than capable with the ball and bat.

Seamer (MF)

Strengths         Fiery temperament

Weakness        Height

Probable line up:

S Sinha; R Patel; H Baker; H Bhojani; K Dasan; H Singh

2nd Fac Medics

Led by the old timer Dev Patel, they are a more than useful group, packed with a variety in bowling and classical, technical batsmen and straight out and out batterers.

They finished top of the Gentlemen’s league, unbeaten. Although, they are far from the finished article they are well formed and can be deadly on their day

Current form: WWWWW

Player profiles

The game promises to be a good one, with a fair supportive turnout from both faculties. What twists and turns will eventuate over the course of 30 overs, who knows. To Sunday then, in the words of Andy Gray “it promises to be a cracker”

Cricket results – 2nd Fac vs English College

Men Against Boys

The old, wiley, ex Liverpool player, Alan Hansen, once said “You never win anything with kids.” Let’s just say, today proved that point.

The last match of the league stage of the CMKS indoor cricket tournament saw 2nd Fac Medics take on English College Boys, a youthful unit led by Harris “I am actually David Baddiel” Zrmzlinova.

With almost a full strength squad to pick from, Captain Dev made several changes to his line- up. Firas, Erfan and Jinx, came in as Waseem and Sanjyoth were away on Brokeback Mountain duty. Dev won the coin toss and elected to field first.

The game got off to, as the Aussies would say, a ripper. Firas, entrusted with the new ball, bowled a delivery that swung out and cut back in off the seam to take the ECBs opening batsmen, Adams, off peg. From that point, it was going to be a good day for the medics. Mo, took the 2nd over, and found it initially hard to control the elaborate swing of the new ball, but after a few deliveries he was hitting some good areas. Firas, Erfan and Mo bowled tidily and ECB only had 37 to show from their first 5 over efforts. Middle over specialist, off spinner Dev, similarly began well, and took a plumb LBW. Erfan and Dev kept it tight, Dev taking another wicket and the fielders backing up the good bowling with some superb run outs. The fielding was scalpel sharp. The score was at 77. Respectable. The last 5 overs heralded 37 runs. 23 coming from the last over, as Haris, ECBs arguably best batsmen, was lucky with some lenient umpiring decisions and some streaky edges. ECB had set a total of 114.

Firas and Dev began carving into the ECB bowling like an open buffet. Without a single wicket being taken, the pair put on a lofty 96. All the exquisite shots they played coming straight out of the coaching manual. Jinx and Erfan kept the score ticking over, and the score was on 131 by the time Kamar and Mo were asked to bat. They batted sensibly and put on 62, the total score just shy of two hundred, at 193.

Results, elsewhere meant the ECB will be Medics opponents in the semi final next. Hopefully, a performance of similar ilk will send Medics through to the final.

Speaking with Kamar after the game he had this to say “ECB were a good team, but you have to beat what is put in front of you. We bowled well. Myself, I think I was the pick of the bowlers, although I should’ve had more wickets if it wasn’t for some umpiring decisions. I think we should have the DRS referral system implemented for next year definitely. The semi final should be a good one, but right now, we’re looking to our next match”

Medics next match, incidentally, is against 1st Faculty. When Kamar was questioned about this friendly, “Yeah, it’s a grudge match and a half. We have an old score to settle with them. We’re primed and pumped. We’re unbeaten, they are a bit down as they didn’t make the finals, so it’s a good chance to rub salt into the wounds.”

So, to next week, the Medics have the semi final to look forward to and the Big One, against 1st Fac. In the words of Kamar “Bring it!”

Cricket Results – 2nd Fac vs Dejvice Cosmos

Lesser Lights Shine Brightly

Another game; another win. Nothing changes, but sometimes everything does. In a tournament that so far has seen the powerhouses of the Second Faculty Medic Cricket team: Kamar “HCB” Subhani, Mo “I like ‘em chunky” Ellahi and Firas “Private School” Raheman, steamroller the opposition into submission, whether it be their pace bowling or their masterful strokeplay, they have been the mainstay of the team and one of the reasons that this team is unbeaten. But, a question I pose to you is, what happens when these three are far from form, or injured on the day?

The sixth match of the CMKS indoor cricket league after the short mid winter break; against Dejvice Cosmos, showed the world that this is far from a three man team.

Captain Patel was forced to make some changes, Firas still suffering from a shoulder injury, drafting in Sanjyoth and a last minute addition, Ashann, as newbie Erfan Kamal requested compassionate leave following the birth of his daughter. The day got off to a good start with skipper winning the toss and electing to set a total. Sanjyoth and Dev set underway and although the pair failed to make the boundaries they had 41 runs after their allotted five overs. It was a good and steady start. The next pair Ashann and Waz began watchfully, before the latter started unfurling a spectacular array of shots, from cover drives to inside out chip shots over mid on. The pair added a 57 without too much ado. The final pair, Kamar and Mo, usually so sturdy and astute, and dead on bankers to score heavily, faltered. Kamikaze running and errors in judgement led to too many wickets being lost between the two. The pair ended in 39. A total of 137, perhaps 20-30 runs lighter of what should’ve been expected.

To the bowling effort then; and by the way the opener’s bowlers, it looked like effort. Mo started off disciplined but it was all downhill from there. Waz and Sanjyoth were taken to the cleaners and the pair easily leaked a large amount of runs. 49 runs were scored from the first five and the medics were cutting forlorn figures across the playing arena. If they continued to bowl as poorly as this, they knew they’d be looking down the barrel of their first defeat.

Sometimes, you have to look for leadership, someone to turn to, inspiration. Dev brought himself on to bowl his loopy offspin. His first delivery dipped quickly on the batsmen, who had decided to go for an over elaborate shot, completely misread the spin and Dev knocked over his furniture. It was just what the medics needed. Dev had the batsmen in trouble throughout his first over, the loop and bounce not being read at all by the batsmen. With the control being exerted by Dev, the rest of the bowlers were able to work around him and offer tidy support. Only 12 runs were scored from the next 5 overs. The following five overs, bowled by Mo and Kamar, went for 28, with Kamar not being his usually lethal self. Dejvice, finished far from the score set by the Medics, on 89, a comprehensive enough victory, mostly thanks to the batting feats of Waz and bowling antics of Dev.

Speaking with Mo after the game he told me of this off day and he looked to the big games to come. “Yeah, well why aii, we were a bit rusty with the bowling perhaps because of the winter break, but again, that’s no excuse, we are professionals. We are playing for the pride of 2nd Fac and some of the boys, including me, let the side down. It could have cost us if it wasn’t for Waz and Skips [Dev]. Waz has been working hard on his batting and is getting into some sort of form for the finals which is sound. Mathematically, we have now qualified top of the group with one game to go which is always an achievement. We’re not looking to ease of the gas; we have English College up next. Then the finals day.”

Elsewhere in the league, Joshiley Dragons picked up points against Vinorhady, to cement their place in second. PCC will most likely come third in the league. As for the Medics opposition in the semi- final, that remains unclear. Depending on how results unfold, it could be any one of three teams, English College, Dejvice Cosmos, or Barbarians.

Cricket results – 2nd Fac vs Vinohrady

Under Par Medics Take Win

The old adage of “playing poorly and still winning is a sign of true champions” is frequently touted around the world’s greatest sporting arenas. I’m not too sure if this phrase is something I can ascribe to the game I have just witnessed between 2nd Fac Medics and Vinohrady. The game was more synonomous to another sporting proverb; banana- skin. A banana- skin is a match where the more superior team, based on ability and form, in this instance the Medics, are expected to comfortably steam roll inferior opposition, The Vinos. Well, it wasn’t as easy as the Medics thought it would be, albeit it due to their lacklustre play.

Fielding probably what has been their weakest team in the tournament so far, Sanjyoth in for Kamar “I have to study bacteria” and with frontline seamer Mo being forced to play despite carrying an adductor longus niggle. Captain Dev lost the toss, again (normal service has resumed), and Vinos captain Tim elected to bat first. Paceman Uth was given the shiny new ball and took a diamond duck (the first wicket of a match). A change of tactics from Dev meant Was was coming on early, but unlike so many overs he has previously bowled he failed to make a breakthrough. The Vinos were building up a head of steam and by the time Sanjyoth came to bowl in the 4th over they were on 39. Sanjyoth’s third delivery was an absolute peach, nipping just off the seam to take the outside edge of Vinos batsman Tim. Jinx took a superb catch and everyone rushed over to congratulate Sanjyoth, but amazingly, the umpires ruled it not out. I’m pretty sure the nick was loud enough to have woken the dead. Medics were shell shocked, but it seemed to galvanize them, as Waz took a wicket the next over, and two more wickets fell in the next 3 overs. Dev brought himself on in the 10th over, bowling what he is more traditionally used to, off spin. He took two wickets in his first over conceding 5 runs and Vinos were soon beginning to struggle on 53 after 10 overs. The last five overs were very eventful, Dev taking 4 more wickets, one of them being a spectacular caught and bowled effort. He ended on very respectable figures of 3-0-18-6. Mo on the other hand, must have been feeling his injury and bowled slightly waywardly with wides and no balls aplenty. Vinos ended on 77, an easy enough target one would presume.

Dev and Uth came out to bat and found the gaps with comfort. By the 3rd over both batsmen were set and were looking to push on with the score on 25. Vinos brought on their slow bowlers. To say they were slow would be the ultimate understatement. You clearly had enough time to make a cup of the finest Assam caj before even thinking about making a shot to play. Dev and Uth thought otherwise. It was like a train wreck. Top edges and suicidal running, coupled with a hat trick maiden over from the Vinos bowler, Austin, saw the pair end their five overs on 8 runs. Sanjyoth and Jinx came in, and if the last pair batted like two armless bandits in a gunfight, then these two batted like two microbiologists trying to cultivate diphtheria without tellurite agar. Again, substandard running and miscommunication cost the pair runs. However, after a deep breath and a bit of refocus the pair got their act together and ended up with 52 runs with some lusty blows down the ground. Waz and Mo, with only 18 runs to get, played some lovely crafted shots. Waz in particular played a gorgeous inside out lofted cover drive to a ball just short of a length, simply exquisite. The Medics ended on 112. Easy enough in the end, but almost snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Speaking with Waseem after the game he had a lot to say of the teams performance today, “Well we almost threw it away there and made it hard for ourselves. Some of that running was filth [not to acceptable standards]. Yeah, I guess we’re going to have to train harder in the gym working on sprints, probably by doing more squats.” I also managed to ask him about the bowling performance of the unit today, “The tactics were new to us, but it definitely worked. Having Dev as spinner and not as a seamer meant that we had a variety bowlers that we didn’t have before. Yeah the skip [captain] bowled well, but it was a good bowling effort from the all the guys. I think mathematically, we’ve made the semi- finals, but we want to keep our intensity up, not let it drop like it did a little bit today. We want to make sure that we qualify top so that we have a better draw in the semi- finals”

The Medics head into the winter break unbeaten on 10 points and have made finals day on 27th March. Elsewhere, Medics next opponents Dejvice Cosmos lost to Joshiley Dragons, who stay 2nd on 8 points. English College, Medics most likely semi- final opponents, won comfortably against Barbarians. EC captain David Baddiel playing well scoring runs and taking wickets.
